How to Clean Artificial Grass

by Mar 14, 2022Blog

Although artificial grass is certainly low-maintenance, it’s definitely not “no-maintenance”. Essentially your turf is like an outdoor carpet that accumulates dirt, debris, hairs, spills and even animal waste. Imagine going an entire year without vacuuming your carpets and then walking on them with bare feet or letting your kids play on a surface like that! Artificial grass is no different, so let’s go over the basics of keeping it clean and sanitary:

Raking Organic Debris: some yards will get more than others depending on the surrounding trees, but its crucial to stay on top of the organic matter before it decomposes into your turf, otherwise you begin to see weeds growing from your turf. All you need is a plastic rake and/or leaf blower to keep the organics off your turf (especially throughout the fall months)

Cleaning Up After Your Dog: for those of you with dogs, there will be a little more cleaning involved, but we actually have an entire article on our best practices for dog-owners with turf: Artificial Grass Maintenence For Dogs

Hosing the Lawn Down With Turf Renu: whether or not you have a pet, this is the fastest way to sanitize your turf and leave it smelling fresh. I won’t bore you with the science, but basically, Turf Renu attaches to your garden hose and sprays out a solution that breaks down enzymes and bacteria organically while leaving behind a fresh scent (think of it like Febreeze for your turf)

Vacuuming the Turf*: Most turf owners are concerned about vacuuming because they don’t want to suck up all the infill sand, so its best to use a shop vacuum and tip the nozzle horizontally and skim the surface to collect pet hair, organic debris, etc. For putting greens, or athletic turf (without infill) feel free to use your Roomba or regular vacuum. If you need some help with this we actually modified a commercial-grade carpet cleaner so that it deep cleans without sucking up the infill. To learn more about our turf cleaning service click here

There is an old saying that goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, meaning that you save your future self some time and money on turf maintenance by staying on top of these cleaning practices regularly. You can actually prevent things like moss and bacteria from accumulating by cleaning your grass as a preventative measure. We made this guide for anyone that likes to “do it yourself”, but we also offer a regular cleaning service for those who don’t want to get their hands dirty!
