How Much Do Paving Stones Cost? A Complete Guide:

If you’re thinking about installing a new patio, driveway, or walkway, you may be wondering how much it will cost to use paving stones and how that compares against alternatives such as concrete. Paving stones can be a far more aesthetic and durable option for outdoor surfaces, but their cost can vary widely depending on a variety of factors. In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at the cost of paving stones for different applications and what you can expect to pay for installation.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Paving Stones:

1. The application:

The pricing of paving stones is affected by the choice of application in several ways. For Example, Paving stones used for commercial applications are typically more expensive than those used for residential purposes due to their need for durability and ability to withstand heavier traffic loads.

2. The Type/Brand of Paving Stone:

There are many different varieties of paving stones to choose from, including concrete, natural stone, and even higher-end materials like granite. There are also several brands out there. In general, here is a quick guide to get you started:

3. The Shape and Size of the Area to Be Paved:

In general, the smaller the area to be paved, the more it will cost by the square foot. Once we begin to pave beyond ~500 square feet, economies of scale can bring down the price per square foot. Another consideration is the shape of the intended area. A rectangular patio may not require any cuts, however anything with curves or angles will require additional attention and materials to perfect.

4. The Complexity and Logistics of the Installation:

This encompasses many factors such as site access, soil type, drainage, grading, design, amount of cutting, and many more. Access to the work area can make a huge difference, as we typically need to get a mini-excavator into the yard and transport several tons of materials and aggregates back and forth from the trucks.

5. Infill:

The type of infill chosen to finish off the paving stones will also affect pricing. Infill is compacted into the gaps between each paving stone leaving a stronger bond between each individual brick. There are several options for infill like: Fine Sand, Polymeric Sand, Romex all of which come in different shades and colours.

6. Features:

Last but not least, to give your paving stone project some character, features like Walls, Steps, Firepits, Outdoor Kitchens, Stone benches & Inlaid lighting will also affect the final price of your paving stone project.

How Much Do Paving Stones Typically Cost?

As mentioned, the cost of paving stones can vary widely depending on the factors listed above. Here are some general cost ranges for different types of paving stones:

1. Good

standard concrete pavers with simple patterns can run anywhere from $15 to $22 per square foot installed. This usually doesn’t require super high-skill labour and thus is often the most affordable option for many homeowners.

2. Better

Natural stone and higher-end concrete pavers can run anywhere from $20 to $35 or more per square foot. The cost will depend on the type of stone and pattern you choose, and we recommend checking out a local hardscape supply showroom.

3. Best

High-end pavers with intricate patterns from suppliers like TechoBloc can run as much as $35 to $45 per square foot installed. These are comprised of the finest materials, usually multiple colours/paver types and intricate designs.
