How Do You Make Artificial Grass Look New Again?

by Jan 5, 2024Uncategorized

If your turf is more than a year old, or it’s been a high traffic area, there is a good chance it looks a little different than the day it was installed… No worries, this is normal! Just like with real grass, after lots of use, the grass blades begin to flatten. Typically around spring time, many of our clients ask us “How can I make my artificial turf look new again?”

There is a special tool we used when installing your turf called a “Powerbroom”, which will clear out any debris and get those grass blades standing up again! Most homeowners don’t have this special tool, but sometimes it can be rented from your nearest tool rental shop. The powerbroom requires tremendous strength and control to operate as it tries to “push you backwards” with great force. Therefore it’s probably safest to leave it with the turf cleaning pros at Turf Team!

If you have flat spots that were created from heavy objects such as furniture, a trampoline, hot tub, etc., adding more infill and brooming it “into the grain” of the grass with a stiff-bristle broom or powerbroom will be your best bet.

It would also be worthwhile to check your “infill levels”, meaning those little sand-like pellets that were originally brushed into your turf. As a rule of thumb, the infill level should cover at least the first one-third of the grass blades. If yours is below this, an infill top-up will help extend the lifespan of your turf, especially for the higher traffic areas.

If you see any weeds or moss growing within your turf, it’s okay to spray weed or moss killer, however you will still need to hit it hard with a powerbroom about a week later. We have also found that a fork can be a good household tool for removing weeds/moss from your turf.

While artificial grass is very low-maintenance, it’s not “zero-maintenance”! You can think of it like an outdoor carpet, occasionally it will need a vacuum and deep cleaning (and especially if kids or dogs are using it). The powerbroom in combination with our turf cleaning machine will have your turf looking like new again and clean enough to eat off of if you really wanted to!

Most higher-end turf products are very durable, however there are certain limitations. In very high-traffic areas the grass blades will never stand perfectly upright, but it’s the exact same with real grass! To make your artificial lawn last for decades to come, we highly recommend a semi-annual maintenance routine. We have a dedicated cleaning crew that can get your artificial turf revitalized and looking brand new again, to get an instant quote on this service, just click here and fill in a couple details!
