Is Artificial Grass Dog-Friendly?

by Mar 7, 2022Blog

We commonly get asked if Artificial Grass is suitable for dog-owners and the answer is always 100% Yes! After installing hundreds of dog applications, we have received nothing but positive feedback and the dogs are usually more excited about the turf then their humans! The strong backing of higher-grade turf prevents hole digging and muddy paws will be a thing of the past. To neutralize the odors, we infill the turf with either Zeolite or Environfill. I won’t bore you with the technical jargon, but they get the job done if you have 1 or 2 dogs occasionally peeing on the turf. If your dog(s) will be going to the bathroom frequently on the turf, we recommend stocking up on a product called “Turf Renu”, which simply attaches to your water hose and rinses the turf, leaving behind a fresh scent. You can order this or something similar on Amazon or from BC Brick in Richmond, BC. Especially in the Vancouver summers when it stops raining, you will want to hose down the areas in which your dog has been going to the bathroom to help flush the ammonia smell down through the sub-base of the turf (otherwise it may not be reaching the drainage holes in the backing of the turf).

To further put your mind at ease about the smell and sanitation, we also offer a turf cleaning service. We have invested in a special machine that deep cleans, washes and extracts debris from the turf, all while applying an organic sanitiser. Most of our dog-owning clients opt to have this service done anywhere from 1 to 6 times throughout the year, and it’s usually in the ballpark of $250-$450/visit depending on the size. Remember, Artificial grass is low-maintenance, but it’s not “no-maintenance”! If you have any other pet-related questions or concerns, just send us an email and we’ll be happy to help.
