Does Snow Damage Artificial Grass?

by Dec 27, 2022Uncategorized

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! If you live here in Vancouver (or anywhere else that receives big dumps of snow) you have nothing to worry about when it comes to your artificial grass lawn. We often get asked whether snow can damage artificial turf or if there are any special maintenance practices, so here is what you need to know about the snow:

  1. You can totally shovel snow off your turf if you need to create a pathway, however it is recommended to use a plastic shovel, and you will find it easier if you push “with the grain” of the turf. Your turf will have a noticeable direction of the grass blades if you take a closer look.
  2. You really don’t need to do anything about the snow on your turf or putting green, you can simply just let it melt away. To accelerate this, you can try pouring warm water on the snow, but you should be careful that it doesn’t turn into ice as this will make the turf slippery to walk on.
  3. We recommend that you DO NOT use melting salt on your artificial grass, as it may end up in the thatch layer and impact the overall drainage of the sub-base

You may notice that the grass blades are laying flatter after all the snow has melted (due to the weight of the snow). To get the grass blades standing more upright and remove any organic debris, you can rent a “powerbroom” from a local rental shop or we can come do this for you! Just send us an email to info@turfteamlandscaping.com and our turf cleaning crew can get your lawn looking like new again after a big snowfall!
