What’s the Difference Between Chinese Turf and American-made Turf?

by Nov 3, 2021Blog

All turf is not created equal! China and USA are the two primary manufacturers of artificial grass, and each have different standards when it comes to both quality and price. As you might have guessed, Chinese turf will be cheaper, while American turf will be a little more expensive per square foot. Why is that? Here is what you should know as a buyer: Chinese turf is more prone to using cheap labour and raw materials to produce their turf at a lower cost. The “overseas” turf might look great initially, however it will not stand the test of time like American-made turf. Common issues of Chinese-made turf include Colour fading, inconsistent blade length, and more grass blades coming out over time. The biggest disparity between these two manufacturers is in the warranty. From our experience in the industry, everyone claims a “10-year warranty”, but what happens when you actually try to take them up on this? You’ll have a really tough time tracking them down, or they might provide you with a 5 sq foot patch of turf to “fix it yourself”. No joke, we have witnessed the horror stories first-hand. When purchasing American-made turf on the other hand, these issues are less common to begin with, and you can register your product for a lifetime warranty that is genuinely redeemable, in the case of any defect. Like anything in life, you get exactly what you pay for…

Chinese Turf may be for you if:

o Budget is the biggest concern, if it’s only for aesthetic purposes or If the area has minimal foot-traffic

o There is a certain colour or style that you like better than the American turf

American Turf is for you if:

o Long-lasting Quality is important to you

o The area will receive heavy foot traffic (ex. A playground or backyard)

o You can afford the extra $0.25 – $1 per square foot or you like a more natural colour and soft feel
