What does a PGA Tour Pro Want From Their Putting Green?

by Feb 25, 2022Blog

After working closely with a handful of professional golfers, there are two main things they look for in their putting green. Variety and realistic performance. When it comes to “variety”, they want the ability to practice every type of putt they frequently face out on the golf course. To achieve this, we need to contour the base layer with an extreme slope, a gentle slope and a flat area. Next, we start rolling balls on the base layer and strategically choose the cup locations to provide left-right, right-left, uphill, downhill and flat putts. They want the truest possible roll so we go with a special type of green imported from the US that all the tour players use (and it’s not cheap!) If the spaces allow, they also want the ability to hit chip shots from both the fairway (short grass) and rough (long grass) that will check up with spin when they hit the green. To do this, we can lay down a thin foam pad layer under the putting green which softens the impact of the ball and prevents damage to the base underneath. As you can imagine, the material cost of this method is not in everyone’s budget, but if it is… you too can own a PGA caliber green in your backyard!
