Envirofill VS Silica Sand: What difference does it make to my artificial grass?

by Mar 8, 2024Uncategorized

The infill stage of a synthetic turf installation is often overlooked and under-appreciated, yet it can make all the difference between a great installation and a bad one! If you are not familiar with the purpose of infill in artificial grass, please check out our article here for more background. In essence, Infill is a sand-like granular substance that gets brushed into the grass blades after installation to weigh down the turf, prevent movements and wrinkling, keep grass blades upright, and provide extra cushion. Certain types of infill also provide benefits, such as odour elimination. To keep things simple here at Turf Team Vancouver, we offer 2 choices… Envirofill or Silica Sand

Envirofill: The best, but not the cheapest

When to use it: If it’s a dog-friendly or child-friendly space, a high-traffic area, preferably we would use it all the time if it’s in the budget!

Pros Cons
  • Does not compact over time (infill serves its purpose for much longer)
  • Pet-friendly
  • Non-toxic and safe for children
  • Organic
  • Best choice for high-traffic areas
  • Green colour blends in with the turf
  • Helps with drainage
  • 16 year warranty from the manufacturer
  • More costly than silica sand

Silica Sand: The cheapest, but not the best

When to use it: for low-traffic areas such as a front lawn that will not have any pet usage

Pros Cons
  • Very Inexpensive, pretty significant savings for larger areas
  • Totally suitable for low-traffic areas such as front lawns
  • Helps with drainage
  • Compacts over time leaving grass blades flatter with heavy traffic
  • Silica dust is very bad to breathe in
  • Not advisable for pet or child turf applications

Okay, so Envirofill is the clear winner if it’s in the budget, but what is the difference in cost? About 3x more for Envirofill, which translates to roughly $1 more per square foot. On smaller yards it’s a no-brainer, but on larger square footages that can add up quickly so it’s good to be aware of the difference, and now you do!
