Can I Pressure Wash My Artificial Grass or Synthetic Putting Green?

by Apr 26, 2022Blog

Clients often ask us if it’s okay to pressure wash their artificial grass or putting green, so we decided to write a whole article based on our experience:

The short answer to this question is “Yes, but use extreme caution!”. If your turf or putting green was installed on an aggregate base (the case for most residential yards), then you need to be careful not to erode or wash away all the fines within the base layer. Additionally, the turf has a layer of infill within the grass blades that is serving an important purpose, so we don’t want to displace the infill either. The only time a pressure washer should ever be used on turf is to get rid of that stubborn moss, about 1 week after moss killer has been applied. For any other stains, you can simply use a carpet cleaning solution (available in the same aisle that you get your laundry detergent). Depending on the PSI level of your pressure washer, these machines can be extremely powerful and have the potential to damage your turf, so be sure to keep the nozzle further away from the grass to reduce the pressure. Hold the wand at a 45-degree angle away from you, and if your pressure washer has a soap attachment, this is also quite helpful to get it extra clean! In an ideal world, you only want to have the pressure washer running for 5-10 minutes before taking a break to let the water settle, otherwise, the green will flood. If you have a power broom, this will help to disperse water off the green and dislodge some of the moss as well. Depending on the size of your green and how bad the moss is, this could take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours to get it looking brand new again. If you live in the greater Vancouver area and would like to leave this to the experts, we offer a turf cleaning and putting green maintenance service to do it for you!
