Fall Maintenance for Artificial Grass

by Oct 14, 2025Uncategorized

Fall has arrived, and while artificial grass is known for being low-maintenance, it’s not completely maintenance-free. If you own a home in Vancouver, you’re already familiar with all the leaves, rain, and debris this season brings down on your lawn. A little care now will keep it looking fresh and vibrant all winter long.

Here are a few simple tips to keep your artificial grass in great shape through the fall and winter months…

1. Clear Away Leaves and Debris

Leaves, pine needles, and small branches can pile up quickly this time of year. If they’re left to sit, they can block drainage, trap moisture, and even create a layer where moss or weeds can grow.

Use a leaf blower or power broom to remove debris – ideally once per week (this will be easier when the leaves are still dry!) Avoid metal rakes—plastic or soft bristles are best to prevent damage to the turf blades.

2. Give It a Quick Rinse

Vancouver’s rain helps a little, but a light rinse with your garden hose once in a while will wash away dirt, pollen, and dust that build up on the surface. This helps the turf stay clean and prevents any dirty film from forming.

If you have pets, rinsing regularly will also help with odour control.

3. Watch for Pooling Water

After a heavy rainfall, take a quick look around your yard. A small puddle or two is fine, but if significant water is pooling on the surface for more than a couple days, the drainage base underneath may be compromised. Regular brushing and turf cleaning can often fix this without needing to install a new drainage system.

4. Brush the Turf Fibres Upright

The weight of rain, debris, and foot traffic can cause turf blades to mat down over time. Running a power broom over your turf will lift the blades back up and redistribute the infill evenly—this makes a big difference in how real and soft the grass feels underfoot.

If you don’t have a power broom, that’s something our team can handle for you with our professional turf cleaning service.

5. Tackle Stains Early

Sap, wet leaves, or pet messes can sometimes leave marks if they sit too long. Mix a little mild soap with warm water, scrub gently with a soft brush, and rinse well. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals—they can damage or discolor the grass.

6. Schedule a Professional Cleaning

Even with regular maintenance, it’s a good idea to have your turf professionally cleaned once or twice a year—ideally in fall before winter sets in. Our commercial cleaning equipment removes debris, sanitizes the surface, and restores the infill without damaging the turf.

Most homeowners book this service in November so their lawn looks its best all winter.

Final Thoughts

Artificial grass is built to handle Vancouver’s weather, but like anything outdoors, it needs the occasional refresh. Spending a few minutes each week (or scheduling a quick Turf Clean visit) will keep it looking brand new year-round.

If you’d rather leave it to the pros, Turf Team offers full-service turf cleaning throughout the Lower Mainland. We’ll handle the washing, brushing, and sanitizing so you can enjoy a clean, green lawn—no raking required.
