How to Measure Your Yard for Turf:

by Mar 11, 2022Blog

Measuring up a yard isn’t always a perfect science, but it’s important to get the numbers right so you don’t overpay for excess turf! Here are a few simple tips to make sure you provide us with an accurate measurement:

  • Turf rolls and Putting Green Rolls ONLY COME IN A 15 FT WIDTH!
  • Always send your measurements in feet, rounded up to the nearest foot
  • When two pieces are seamed together, the grass blades MUST be going in the same direction
  • Width-wise seams (also known as “butt seams”) are always more visible than length-wise seam. When ever possible, we try to minimize the number of seams
  • “Cut Plan” simply means the pieces of turf required to surface a job
  • All we need to know to provide an exact quote is the cut plan (ex. “We need two pieces of 15×9’ and one piece of 15×22’ to surface my yard”)

Have a look at the example below. In example #1, we have an interesting dilemma. With a 16×18’ yard you could go with two pieces of 15×16’ which would cover the whole area, but you end up paying for an extra 192 sq ft of un-used turf, or the more cost-efficient option is to go with one piece of 15×16’ and add a 3’ wide garden bed on the side with some low-maintenance plants. In a perfect world, the area would be within any multiple of 15’ however this is rarely the case… In example #2, it would take some serious geometry to calculate the exact square footage, so let’s keep things simple! Just measure 15 feet out from one end for the width, and then measure the length (at the longest point). If we can re-use the cutoff pieces, we will but remember the grass blades need to be running the same direction In summary, just remember that turf rolls come in widths of 15’ (and any length). Depending on the shape and size of your yard it could be one simple piece, or it may be several different pieces seamed together. The only thing your installer needs to know to provide an accurate quote is the “cut plan” (for example: “We will need a 15×20’ and 15×20’ piece because my yard in 28’x20’) Hopefully this provides clarity and not confusion, but if you need any help, feel free to reach out to us at info@turfteamlandscaping.com!
